Planting Dogwood Trees in Fall

dogwood treeDogwood blossoms are one of the first signs of spring in Texas. But many homeowners plant them because they offer multi-season interest. In the fall, the leaves turn colors and in the winter, their delicate branching pattern adds shape to a landscape.

The best time to plant dogwoods in Austin is actually now: early-mid November to early December, after the tree has gone dormant. This will give the trees time to become established before hot summer weather arrives in May.

You’ll need to prepare the soil appropriately to ensure that your dogwoods will receive the nutrients they need. The best “home” for these trees is soil that is well drained or loamy, with a slightly acid pH. If your soil is heavy clay or consistently wet, plant your trees in a raised bed to keep their roots dry.

If your soil is sandy or loamy, plant your dogwoods in holes that go only as deep as their rootballs. If your soil is clayey, compacted or has poor drainage, make the holes three times the rootballs’ width and two-thirds as deep as the rootballs.

Dogwoods will grow in sun or shade. Be aware, though, that too much shade will cause your trees to be less dense and have poor flowering and fall color. A good compromise is to plant your dogwoods in an area that gets morning sunlight and then partial shade in the afternoon.

Keeping in mind your water restrictions,  your dogwoods will need water every day for two to three weeks after planting. Watering with a hand-held hose or a refillable watering vessel, such as a bucket or a Treegator®, is allowed at any time on any day of the week.

After that initial time period, water twice a week for another year. Once established, water once a week for trees in full sun, but only during extended drought for trees in partial shade.
