You think you have your irrigation system ready for another Austin spring and summer. Then you discover that part of the PVC pipe attached to your irrigation system is broken. Now what?
It may seem a complicated process to repair the damaged area. But if you have the proper cutting tools, a repair coupling and PVC solvent, you should be able to do fix it with only minimum of inconvenience.
Prep for repair
Turn off the water supply. Afterwards, you’ll need to clear out the work area, making sure that the broken pipe is itself is clean and dry.
Remove damaged area
Using a PVC cutting tool or hacksaw, cut out the broken section of the pipe. Take out at least one foot of piping to ease replacement and be sure to remove any shavings or burrs left behind by the cutting process.
Cut new piece of PVC piping
The length of the replacement pipe should be about one inch shorter than the segment you removed.
Prep PVC coupling
Apply primer to the now cut main pipe and inside of a PVC coupling. Then apply PVC solvent. Press the coupling onto the pipe using a twisting motion. Then slide another PVC coupling onto the other cut main pipe. Slide it far enough to expose at least one inch of the pipe end.
Insert the replacement pipe
Prime and cement one side of the new pipe segment and slide it into the coupling with a twisting motion. Do the same with the opposite side of the new segment and the other end of the cut pipe. Apply solvent and slide the repair coupling over the joint between the new and cut pipe, again using a twisting motion.
Finish work
Clean area and let solvent cure according to solvent instructions. Once enough time has passed, turn water back on.
