Patching a Sprinkler Pipe

The best thing about fully or semi-automated sprinkler systems is that they require very little maintenance. The one downside is that the pipes feeding these systems are typically made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which can become brittle and leak or break as they age. Fortunately — and even if you’re not a DIYer — these kinds of problems are neither difficult nor expensive to fix.

Expose broken pipe

Determine the approximate area where you think the break or leak is located and dig around the pipe. Once you’ve pinpointed where the water is coming from, turn off the water main. Then excavate more thoroughly around and under the pipe to remove as much dirt and mud as possible around the damaged area.

For small holes: Use a snap-on coupler

For small holes, you can buy PVC repair kits at the hardware store. Choose a patch that matches the diameter of the leaking pipe. If the kit doesn’t already come with PVC cement, you’ll need to buy that as well.

Wipe the damaged area with a rage to remove mud and dry it. Paint the pipe cement onto both surfaces, put the patch pieces over it and snap them together. Let dry for the time recommended by kit manufacturer.

For medium-sized holes/breaks: Use a PVC compression fitting

If the break is larger, cut out the broken section of the pipe and use a PVC compression fitting (which works with both PVC and galvanized pipes). Place the rubber washer to cover each end of the break and hand-tighten after securing the fitting in the middle. The rubber will seal the pipe and prevent the water from coming out.

For large holes/breaks: Splice pipe

Large breaks will necessitate that you cut out the damaged pipe section. Once you’ve done that, replace it with a new length of pipe that is slightly smaller in diameter than the original pipe. Apply PVC pipe cement inside one end of the original pipe and outside one end of the new piece of pipe and push it in; do the same for the opposite end. Allow the repair to dry for the time recommended by the pipe cement manufacturer.

4 Common Problems with Sprinkler Controllers and How to Fix Them

A residential sprinkler control unit can be a busy homeowner’s best friend . . . until something goes wrong. Then it can become a frustrating nightmare.

Following are four of the most common problems you’ll encounter and simple ways to fix them.

1. The blank display

More than likely, your unit has experienced some kind of electrical service disruption that has caused it to go offline.

Locate the reset button on the controller. This is usually a small inverted button that you can only access with a thin “tool” like the end of a paper clip. Insert your “tool” into the reset slot and press until the display indicates that the controller is back online.

2. The inactive controller

If the system doesn’t seem to be running, check that the controller is set to auto or run. Remember: while scheduled settings may be programmed, they are not activated until the controller is set to auto.

If you see that the controller is set to run, the start time may not have been saved. Turn the controller dial to set watering times. If no time appears, enter a start time as well as starts for each program or zone. Afterwards, confirm that the current day, time and watering days are also correct.

3. The off-schedule watering

If you find that your system is watering at times it shouldn’t, chances are that the manual override key may have been accidentally activated.

The easiest way to clear up this issue is to turn the dial to the off position for a minute or two and then set it back to run. If the problem persists, check the watering start times for an unwanted scheduled time and delete it.

4. The valve failure

When this happens, it’s usually because the run time or watering duration time hasn’t been set. You can remedy this by twisting the controller dial to the desired valve. If the run time is blank, use the up and down buttons to set a duration time.

If, however, you see the alarm light go off or an error message on the controller display, you may be dealing with a valve solenoid issue which may require you to replace the connecting irrigation wire.
