Programming a Sprinkler Timer

Matt Sorenson

automatic water sprinklerSprinkler control timers allow you to keep your lawn and garden healthy and looking good.  They’ll also let you manage how much water you use, which in drought-stricken Austin is always good news.  But to reap these benefits, you’ll need to program your controller correctly.

1. Set the correct date/time

Rotate timer dial to “Set Date & Time.”  On more complex timers, the month will flash on the display.  Press the plus (+) and minus (-) buttons until the correct month shows. Then press “Next” to set it in the display.  Using the plus and minus buttons, bring up the correct day and press “Next” again.  Continue the pattern with the year, hour and minutes.

2. Enter zip code

Rotate the dialer to “Configure Controller.”  The first digit will be flashing.  Enter the first digit of your zip code using the plus and minus buttons: repeat with the rest of the digits. By setting your zip code, you will allow a controller to adjust its settings based on historical weather data for your area.

3. Enter watering days

This is crucial, especially here in Austin, which is still under stage 2 water restrictions. Check the Austin Water website at http://austintexas.gov/department/stage-2-watering-restrictions for the day you can water.  Again, use the plus/minus buttons to make the appropriate choice.

4. Input zone programming

Rotate the dial to “Input Zone Information” and select the zone number (remember, some areas of your landscaping may need more or less watering depending on such factors as soil and plant types).  Then press “Next” and select “Enable.”  Select the sprinkler type method, using the plus/minus buttons.  Continue programming through soil section, slope angle, plant types, shade factor, density and plant maturity.

5. Run a final check

Review the data you’ve entered for each of your landscaping zones.  You can do this by looking at the display, which will provide a summary of the information you’ve added. Press “Accept.”  Then rotate the controller dial to “Auto.”  Your system should now be ready to go.
