4 Tips to Make Your Turf Grass Drought Resistant

Consistently warm weather in Texas makes it easy for homeowners to lay down sod anytime of year. But because Austin is in the middle of one of its worst dry spells ever, you’ll need to take extra precautions to ensure your turf grass is as drought resistant as possible.

1. Mow carefully and often
Turf grass resists drought best when mowed to a height of 2 ½ to 3 inches. That’s because grass leaves keep the soil cool. And when the soil is cool, it provides more drought tolerance to turf grass root systems.

2. Don’t overdo the nitrogen
Spread only the minimum required nitrogen. Anything in excess will promote overgrowth which requires more water.

Mulch with clippings

After you mow, leave clippings on the turf grass. This “mulch” keeps turf grass root systems cool and promotes drought resistance.

3. Water deeply rather than often
Turf grass won’t grow through dry soil in search of wet soil, so it’s important to water deeply and well. Also be aware that turf grass roots can grow as deep as 12 inches which can help the grass itself survive drought conditions.

To see how far water is penetrating, use a small shovel and measuring tape after irrigation. Continue doing this until your turf grass roots have reached their full extension.

4. Aerate your lawn twice a year
Aerating your lawn maximizes water penetration as well as solid root growth. And good turf grass root growth promotes drought resistance.
